The success and longevity of 126 Artist-run Gallery in Galway, Ireland is an occasion to celebrate. It speaks well of all of its supporters/contributors and directors over the years, and also of the city, and county. The new publication Artist-run Democracy: Sustaining a Model marks 15+ years of this ‘Celtic Model’ of artist-led management and its importance to Ireland and beyond.

Published by Onomatopee in Eindhoven, NL, and edited by artist and former 126 director Jim Ricks, the opportunity was taken at the gallery’s 15th anniversary to preserve and organise the enormous amount of activity it has undertaken. But also to commemorate the project, everyone who directed, and everyone who has shown there. The book would not have been possible without the additional support of the Arts Council of Ireland, Galway City Council, and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.

It is a formidable archival publication that also focuses on the volunteer directors, the educational value of the project, its challenges, its model, its history of ‘punching above its weight’, and its relevance internationally as a progressive Artist-run model.

Additionally, a diverse selection of 10 former board members from over the years have made written contributions, reflecting on their time at the helm of the gallery.

The day’s events will be opened by former Arts Officer of Galway City, James C. Harrold, followed by a round table discussion led by Megs Morley, of the Galway Arts Centre, with former directors: Austin Ivers, Jim Ricks, Anne Marie McKee, Lucy Elvis, Meadhbh McNutt, and the current board. It will take place on April 8, starting at 11am at 126 Artist-run Gallery, in Hidden Valley, Galway City, as part of the Cúirt International Festival. The round table will continue for a few hours, followed by a celebration and informal conversations in the gallery.
