126 is pleased to announce an open call for a public art commission in the courtyard of 126 for 2020. This commission is part of the 126 2020 programme “Meaningful | Encounters”. The commission is part of the second strand exploring how audiences encounter visual arts. Seeing a lack of public art visible around Galway City, 126 hope to create something for visitors to experience and view, even when 126 is closed for installation. The sculpture will remain in place until at least May 2022. In 2020, Galway will become the European Capital of Culture, 126 wishes to create our own legacy for the momentous year ahead.

126 for its 2020/21 cultural programme plans to undertake one of our most ambitious programmes in both scale and connectivity to date. Titled “Meaningful | Encounters” the project focuses on working with artists to develop a series of exhibitions, events and programming which address a multitude of aspects of contemporary life and deeply meaningful issues which affect us now. 126 welcome’s submissions of any kind with a strong weight given to submissions which reflect the on “Meaningful | Encounters” project in fresh and unique ways and on Galway itself.

The budget is set as follows: Artist fee: €1,000, Production costs: €4,225. 126 will cover administration costs and accommodation for the artist for the launch of the sculpture. 126 aim’s to have the project completed in early 2020 but are happy to work with the artist(s) on this. The selection panel will consist of members of the 126 Board of Directors and 2 outside artists.
